About Frenectomy

A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure performed to remove the band of muscle tissue (frenum) that is connected to the lip, cheek or floor of the mouth. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthetic. Frenectomies are typically performed when the frenum limits movement of the tongue causing a patient issues with eating, chewing and speaking. In addition, the procedure may be performed to prevent a gap from reoccurring after a patient has straightened their teeth with braces. Board-certified dentist, Dr. Todd McCracken and the skilled dental team at Laser Smile Studio in Denton, TX can help to determine whether a patient will benefit from a frenectomy at a dental consultation.

Benefits of a Frenectomy

Patients who previously suffered from a frenum related issue that have chosen frenectomy as their treatment choice, typically experience a better quality of life. The benefits of a frenectomy include:

  • A reduction in oral discomfort.
  • A more appealing smile and the elimination of tooth gap between the two upper front teeth.
  • Renewed self confidence and self esteem.
  • More functional chewing and biting.
  • A more secure denture fit.

What to Expect

Prior to the surgical procedure, Dr. McCracken will examine the condition to determine the severity of each patient's restriction. In some cases, individuals may only need a minor cut to the frenum to provide optimal movability to the tongue or upper lip. However, in other cases, after the initial incision is made, it will be followed by an additional surgical release of the muscle fibers within the area. Once the frenum and restricting muscle fibers are cut, the incision will be sutured closed. Typically, a frenectomy is performed under a local anesthetic and takes about 15 – 30 minutes.

Treatment Aftercare

After the procedure, tenderness and soreness are common, but pain medication may be prescribed to alleviate the discomfort. It's also essential to keep the sutured area as clean as possible. Therefore, brushing with a soft tooth brush and gently rinsing the mouth with light salt water after every meal is encouraged. These simple actions will help to reduce the risk of potential infection. Depending on the type of stitches used, a follow up appointment may need to be made to remove insoluble stitches. Optimum healing usually takes 1 – 3 weeks. g, infection, or fever please call our office right away.
