About Tooth-Colored Fillings

Another invaluable reason to schedule and keep annual dental exams and cleanings is so that dental problems, like cavities and tooth decay can be detected and treated in their early stages, before more serious treatments will be needed. The preferred cavity treatment method of the past was amalgram, or metal fillings, used to seal the tooth after the cavity was removed with a dental drill. Our board-certified dentist Dr. Todd McCracken at Laser Smile Studio in Denton, TX, recommends a better solution for the treatment and filling of a cavity with air abrasion and tooth-colored fillings. Air abrasion technology is the use of high powered air and safe particles (aluminum oxide and baking soda) to essentially blast the decay, which is then suctioned away with standard dental tools. Next, composite resin will be matched to the color of the surrounding teeth, and used to fill the tooth. This process is quick and simple and can be performed in a single dental visit. What to Expect

Tooth-colored fillings via air abrasion technology can be performed in the Laser Smile Studio office and does not always require an anesthetic though sedation dentistry is always available at our facility for pain and discomfort. Once the patient is prepared, the dentist can use the air abrasion technology to carefully remove the decayed area of the enamel. Then, Dr. McCracken will etch with tooth with an acid gel to help bond the tooth-colored filling when it is placed. The resin is applied and hardened with a special light. Dr. McCracken will continue to apply layers of resin and harden them with the light until the tooth is strong and even. Any excess resin can be polished and smoothed with the drill.

Treatment Aftercare

Immediately after the filling is placed and dried, Dr. McCracken will finish and polish the tooth for smooth edges. Patients may notice sensitivity to hot, cold, sweet, pressure, and more. This sensitivity is only temporary and should not last more than 1 - 2 weeks. Patients should continue a good home oral care routine, including brushing and flossing, in addition to regular dental exams and cleanings. Our dental team will monitor the condition of your filling at each visit and help you determine when you need a replacement.

Insurance Coverage

Most dental insurance companies cover part of the cost of a tooth-colored filling whether it is a new filling or a replacement for an old silver amalgam (metal) filling. Our office will help patients determine their coverage and personal cost during the consultation. Patients who don't have or don't want to use their insurance have several payment and financing options through our office.
